The Best Black Ballet Flats: Timeless Style and All-Day Comfort

Black ballet flats are quiet the little heroes in our busy lives. They dash about from a school run to work meeting, from airport check-in to a family dinner at the local pizza joint. All with little fuss. Which amusing because in our family, while the black ballet flats are strolling through all possible scenarios, it doesn't quite roll like that. We are of course late again on the school run and doing all we can to avoid having to take the child to the school reception. In the team meeting, we are trying to think of imaginative reasons as to why we need that task carried over again. Trying to make sense of the fact that I've paid a grand for this flight, why am I printing off labels to stick to my suitcases - when did this become a thing. Then having to justify your pizza choice .. yes I'm having the La Reine again, and I don't care. Yes ballet flats will take you from school run to meal out, but this a more realistic version of events in our house.

At Cocorose London, we’ve been designing and making soft leather ballet flats since 2007. Janan's take on a classic black flat brings together the elegant lines with serious comfort -  cushioning under your heel, and a fit that hugs without rubbing. If you’ve sworn off flats because they used to pinch or flap, this is your sign to try again. No heel to wobble on, no trend expiry date, no drama. Just slip on, feel good, and get on with your day .. you order the La Reine.

Ok lets get serious ... Why we all need a pair of black ballet flats,

Why Black Ballet Flats Earn Their Keep?

  1. They work with everything,
Sharp trousers. Blue jeans. Midi dresses. Tailored shorts. Close your eyes, what else can you see in your wardrobe. Black ballet flats slot in with ease and give any outfit a neat finish.
  2. They suit real life.
Meetings at work, school gates - and deputy heads office for another telling off, pavements - dodging the uneven paving which you just know the council will sort out next fiscal year, wedding dance floors - who knew you love Phil Collins that much. If your days are full and varied, a reliable flat makes life simpler. Well ok, perhaps not simpler but at least you will not have to worry about your shoes!
  3. They are seasonless
They really are - clearly not Chicago in the snow or Chiang Mai in the rain - but Spring to deep autumn you are sorted. Wear with bare ankles in spring and summer, tights in autumn, cosy socks under wide-leg trousers in winter. Same pair, year-round.
  4. They travel really well
They are right Jane Mcdonald meets Phileas Fogg. What's more our foldable construction means many Cocorose styles pack into a tote or carry-on. Let me share a link 👉 Shop our Foldable Ballet Flats

What Makes a Great Black Ballet Flat?

The difference between “cute for ten minutes” and “comfortable all day” comes down to build or construction and materials. As we say in footwear, its "Last First", meaning we start the design of the shoe by selecting the right last or mold. Here’s what to look for when you want a pair that feels as good at 7pm as it did at 7am.

Soft, Premium Leather

Have you got a pair of shoes at home that a sales assistant said "you may need to wear them in a little". Wear them in a little what, a bath of moisturiser. Our leather is soft, really soft, from the first wear. We use sheep leather on our ballet flats, and don't over use material in lining or counter lining. That means less rubbing. red marks - no thank you. Many customers switch to Cocorose after all too many sore heels. Why wait?

Deep, Double Cushioning

Some say a thin insole looks pretty, but does it? Really? It doesn’t carry you through a day on you feet. In footwear design the 'Stack Height' is the amount of materials between insole board and your foot - basically the insole. Our flats use memory foam layers that cradle the heel and forefoot. The difference shows up after hours on your feet, there is less fatigue, better mood.

Flexible Yet Hard-Wearing Soles

A sole should bend as you walk, not fight your stride. Unless you out trekking of course. In our ballet pumps we pair flexibility with a durable base for pavements from London to Londonderry.

Gentle, Secure Topline

That neat edge around the shoe needs the right tension, making the ballet flat secure without biting. Our toplines hold the foot, help reduce slipping at the heel and avoid the dreaded elastic “cutting” feeling.

Achilles Comfort

A small detail, you may think, and perhaps you are correct, a detail with huge impact. Janan designed in the padded heel collar from the first samples of our leather flats. That little cushion saves countless blisters and lets you walk far further than you expected.

Foldable Construction

Many Cocorose leather flats fold neatly into a travel pouch; a purse that come with each pair. Pop them in your handbag, switch from heels at a wedding, change into flats for a commute. There many unique factors that help set us apart, but Janan created the foldable ballet flat in 2007, from her painful commute experience - its how we started and we still have foldability as a key part of our range. London Unfolded, Cocorose the original folding shoe.

Fit and sizing tips for ballet flats

  • True to size works for most feet in our core styles. If you sit between sizes and prefer wiggle room at the toe, consider the half size up where available.
  • Wide feet or bunions? Soft leather helps. The upper will give with wear. Many customers with sensitive feet choose Buckingham or Sandringham for the gentle topline and padding.
  • New shoe feel. Expect softness from the first hour, followed by gentle moulding over the next few wears. No lengthy “breaking in” saga.

Still unsure? Check our Size Guide or drop a note to customer care.

Care that keeps them looking new

  • Daily care. Wipe with a soft cloth after wear. Urban dust dulls leather; a quick buff brings back the glow.
  • Condition. Use a quality leather conditioner periodically to keep the upper supple.
  • Wet weather. Leather hates puddles. If caught in rain, stuff with paper and let them air dry away from heat.
  • Rotate. Give flats a day’s rest between heavy wears.

What Our Customers Say about Black Ballet Flats

Still the best flats ever. Been wearing Cocorose for 10 years ♥️” – Adeline
Classy. These shoes are soft & comfortable. The bow adds a nice, classy touch to a basic black flat. I have worn these shoes dressing up or in casual clothing. I have received many compliments on them."- Heather S.
My faithful companion in China and South Korea. The Harrow ballerinas l purchased in black did not disappoint. They are comfortable to wear all day long, and on a night club outing in Itaewon, the boys were shocked to see my clutch materialise into shoes and a bag for my heels. My Harrow ballerinas and l also went to visit the palace in Seoul. I am looking forward to buying my next pair in a different colour. Also, thank you to the team for sending the shoes to me express so that l could have them for my trip. Much appreciated” – Yvonne M
