Spotlight On...Coco Marie

This January the spotlight is on… Coco Marie! Coco Marie is a gorgeous boutique nestled in the picturesque town of Old Amersham in Buckinghamshire. Coco Marie is owned and run by Jen and her mother, Jan, who were inspired to open their first store in Cornwall after finding that they couldn’t find a high end boutique that stocked the kinds of unique designer labels that they loved! Eight years on and Coco Marie is still leading the way for luxury labels.

We asked Jen a few questions about the store, her favourite pieces and (of course!) her favourite Cocorose London pumps. Here’s what she said… When did you open Coco Marie and why? My Mum and I opened our first store in Truro Cornwall in 2006 after I had moved there with my husband. I had no idea what I was going to do down there and at the time there were no stores that sold the brands I had loved and had worn living back in Bucks. My Dad suggested putting together a business plan and opening up a boutique in Truro. I had always wanted my own store since I was a child. In fact, a family friend said she remembered asking me when I was 8 what I’d be when I grow up and I said I’d own my own shop selling clothes I loved! After having our two children my husband and I moved back to Bucks and Mum and I opened our store in Old Amersham in 2009. Is there a particular look that you wanted to achieve in your store? The aesthetic of the clothing we have discovered we sell best in Old Amersham is smart casual. Pieces that can be dressed up or dressed down. Our bestsellers this winter are skinny jeans, layering tops, knitwear and scarves. The look of the store itself compliments this- white walls with a back accent wall of flocked black wallpaper, industrial rails but highlighted with bespoke Coco Marie wall brackets for our shelves. What do you feel makes Coco Marie special? Because Mum and I own the shop together we attract a wide customer base. Our younger customers in their teens and twenties love Superdry, MinkPink and Evil Twin, whilst Soaked in Luxury and Set seems to attract ladies in their 30’s upwards. One of our best customers is in her 70’s and buys lots of accessories from us. We had initially aimed the shop at ladies in their 30’s and 40’s but like I said we have had a daughter, mother and granddaughter all buy from us. We’ve been complimented on our honesty and find people come back again knowing we won’t sell them something unsuitable. What are your current favourite fashion items from your store? I love oversized knitwear and we have several gorgeous ones by Danish brand Soaked In Luxury at the moment, plus I can’t stop wearing my black jeans by Levi’s Curve ID. I’ve never had jeans fit so well but the Curve ID concept is essentially a bespoke fitting service so I know my curve and size and any style within the range will fit me perfectly. I’m teaming both of these with my fave scarves by another Danish brand Becksondergaard- they are so soft and have so much fabric in and are a bestseller in store and online. What are your favourite Cocorose London ballet pumps? Once the weather warms up I’ll be wearing the above with my Cocorose London Michele pumps- I bought the black leather with nude fishskin toe detailing and am desperate for warmer weather now! They go with so many things in my wardrobe. What are the essentials every woman needs in their wardrobe this season? Skinny jeans, layering t-shirts (with the ever changing British weather start with lots of layers and remove where needed!), scarves in an array of colours and of course some great foldable ballet pumps!
