A New Year, 2 New Seasons

First One In, Last One Out: In the Shoes of an Entrepreneur
Written by Janan Leo, Founder & Creative Director of Cocorose London

I’m often asked about how and why I set up Cocorose London and what it’s like running my own business. As an entrepreneur in the fashion industry, the glamour and glitz often mask the daily highs and lows that go on behind the scenes and the whole-hearted team effort that goes into creating a beautiful, international brand. My passion here is to unfold the emotions that run with every step of being my own entrepreneur and to lay bare what it’s like being in my shoes.

In the fashion world, the arrival of the New Year signals the launch of a new season collection. Well, two collections actually. There’s the imminent Spring-Summer collection which will hit the stores shortly and then there’s the launch of the new Autumn/Fall-Winter collection to the trade. For this post, I’m going to focus on the latter.

Eurostar

Eurostar. Image by standard.co.uk

As a designer and entrepreneur, my relationship with this time of year is a mixture of giddy excitement coupled with what I can only describe as immense stress. As I write this post, I’m on the Fashion Express aka Eurostar, from London to Paris, which is where our first show of the season takes place. This is where we introduce our new collection to glossy, international Buyers, from independents right through to multi department stores and where we can launch our new innovations and present Cocorose London the Brand.

Cocorose London in Milan

One of our shows in Milan

As the train zooms past open fields and cars move from left hand to right hand drive, this rare moment of peace on my journey allows me to dig that little bit deeper than I’d normally let myself at this time of year, to reflect on the past months and continue to strategise for the future few.

Over the past six months, I’ve been completely absorbed, consciously and subconsciously, in preparing for the new AW16 collection, studying the trends, finding my inspiration and interpreting all my thoughts and ideas into my new designs and collection. There have been sleepless nights of costings, swatches and images just jumbled and tangled up in a web of anxiety; hours and hours of travelling to and from to work on the new collection, jet-lag rearing it’s unrestful head at every unopportune moment; passionate discussions and negotiations about the new sample development and time (so much time!) dedicated and committed to working on the new samples and patterns.

My development of samples

My development of samples

And finally, what seems to juxtapose itself in being the longest but also the shortest moment, I get to experience the pure delight, joy and excitement of seeing all my work and ideas come to fruition when my final samples are finished. I can’t stop looking at the collection, snapping pictures for my family and team and trying all the shoes on. This is what makes all the anxiety and exhaustion worthwhile.

Following this, there’s a huge amount of teamwork that’s then dedicated to our campaign photo shoot and pulling together all of our supporting collateral, which prepares us for the season ahead despite the rush against time.

Cocorose London Behind the Scenes of Our Campaign Photo Shoot

Cocorose London Behind the Scenes of Our Campaign Photo Shoot

The pressure of launching a new collection is constantly on the horizon, from the ever-increasing costs of creating the range right the way through to what the potential reactions and feedback would be, not just from our buyers, but from our extended team too. How will the collection be received? Have I nailed the trends? How will we perform as a brand this season? Is our display and merchandising for the new collection right, and will it make an impact? Will the new styles, designs and innovations be appreciated? As an entrepreneur and designer, ‎these are just a small handful of the questions that rush around and collide together in my head.

Over the years, I’ve learned that it’s just natural to feel this way with each new collection that we launch. The crux of these emotions boils down to so much that’s yet unknown‎ about the season ahead. It’s as if everything is delicately balanced on a mixture of luck, optimism and right-place-right-time. I trust my gut instinct, as so many times before, and I can’t wait to take hold of the opportunities that the new season will present. The world truly is my oyster.

As the train pulls into the Gare du Nord station in Paris, I’m reminded of what I was once told a while ago; ‘You’re only as good as your last collection.’ ‎No pressure then, so the only thing left to do is go and get ‘em!

Last Friday the 8th of January marked the 2016 nominations announcement for the British Academy Film Awards and, as official Gift Partners to the prestigious event, Cocorose London were invited to attend along with members of the Press and other Partners.

The BAFTA Nominations Announcement

The BAFTA Nominations Announcement

Starting at 7am that first Friday back from the Christmas and New Year break, it was definitely a challenging feat to rise at such an early hour, but the excitement of the nominations that would be presented by Stephen Fry and Gugu Mbatha-Raw made the cold and bleak morning start bearable. Not to mention the bacon and sausage sandwiches and cups of tea that BAFTA do so incredibly well.

Breakfast at BAFTA

Breakfast at BAFTA

As I headed towards Piccadilly on the tube, I reflected on the partnership that we have with BAFTA. It was a surreal moment when I stopped to think and realized that it’s been seven years since we first became an official Gift Partner to the British Academy Film Awards. I still remember the mixture of emotions that I experienced when everything had been confirmed; excitement, stress, disbelief and pride that accompanied that poignant moment. It was 2009, two years after I had founded Cocorose London. I was still working my full time job as NPD Manager for Virgin Trains and focusing on building the business in my spare time. Gareth had just joined Cocorose full time, so he managed the process with Linda and Louise and I caught up with all the details during my lunch hours and in between mapping out customer experience journeys for Virgin Trains’ customers. Thank goodness for my BlackBerry which kept me on track.

Awaiting the 2016 Nominations Announcement in the Princess Anne Theatre

Awaiting the 2016 Nominations Announcement in the Princess Anne Theatre

For each of the previous six and this coming 7th year that our signature, foldable shoes have been in the Gift Bags, we’ve stretched ourselves and gone all out to create a limited edition design, whether it had red lining to signify the red carpet, a special presentation box or a completely new and unique style, exclusively for the Gift Bags. I won’t stretch the truth and say that it’s ever been an easy task to ensure the smooth run of events, from design to production to logistics; we’ve certainly had our fair share and more of obstacles and challenges to cross but like wine, with each year that passes, our process matures and runs smoother.

‎In the autumn of 2012, we created our campaign called London Unfolded. It was brilliant but incredibly hard work. We traipsed around London interviewing and shooting continuously for days through the unpredictable London weather. We worked day and night to get the copy and layout done. And our reward? We stood for hours outside tube stations handing out beautifully printed and pressed copies of London Unfolded to passing commuters. Since those days, I always make a point to ensure I politely accept or decline when I’m handed a flyer. I know it’s not an easy job.

London Unfolded by Cocorose London

London Unfolded by Cocorose London

Saying that, it wasn’t the first time I handed out flyers to passing trade. It reminded me of when I first started Cocorose London and to help spread the word, I would hand out flyers at Highgate tube station to the morning rush hour.

Back to London Unfolded.
Nevermind the hard work involved, the numb fingers we had from the bitter cold‎ or the ridiculously early morning starts to beat the rush hour so we could place ourselves ‘just so’ outside the tube stations, hustling alongside Metro and Stylist for the pucker positions. The reward and buzz I felt from being able to communicate the culmination of months of work and effort was absolutely invaluable. We created it, from concept to launch. We made it happen. And we were creatively informing thousands of customers about Cocorose London.

Over the next two years, we would evolve our concept and create beautifully shot and edited London Unfolded videos which would explore – or unfold – the lives of our Cocorosers in London. London Unfolded. I’m really proud of these videos and our team did an amazing job with them. You can watch the videos and see our very first London Unfolded campaign here and read our further blog posts here on the inspiration behind each of our shoe names and how we’ve been unfolding the different areas of our wonderful city of London.

Going full circle, I arrive back at where I started. The BAFTA Gift Bag. This year, we’re giving two very lucky Cocorosers the opportunity to win one of these highly covetable Gift Bags. They’re not easy to come by, so do take the chance and enter. You never know and it could just be you. We’ll be launching the competition page on our website soon so stay tuned for further information.

To see the full list of this year’s BAFTA Nominations, check out www.bafta.org and don’t forget to tune in live on Sunday February 14th at 7.35pm GMT on BBC1.

At Cocorose HQ, we love all things that fold and unfold, and at Merchant Square, Paddington Basin, we love the architectural marvel that is Heatherwick’s Rolling Bridge.

The bridge opened in 2004 as part of the Grand Union Canal office and retail development and there are plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes in the area for a spot of lunch or evening out.
When curled up, the bridge, looking more like a sculpture than a bridge, allows boats to pass through the inlet. When uncurled, the bridge allows pedestrians to cross the inlet.

Think of Hampstead and most likely images of the vast heath, beautiful houses,
busy high street and cobbled laneswith bijou cafes and boutiques
come to mind. But like many other areas of London, Hampstead
wasn’t always as fashionable as it is today.

The Vale of Health, which borders Hampstead Heath, is a wonderfully picturesque mini village within Hampstead, with narrow passages running between the large villas and cute cottages. In the 1700s however, the Vale of Health was a marshy bog, originally known as Gangmoor and then Hatches Bottom.

Sandy Heath Pond

The marshlands were drained to make way for a pond in 1777 and this allowed a few cottages to be built, although the area continued to be seen as a blight on the heath. In an attempt to shed its old image, in the early 1800s enterprising locals renamed Hatches Bottom as Vale of Health. New houses were built and leading literary figures of the time, including Leigh Hunt, Byron and Shelley, moved in or visited the area.

On the edge of the heath, this was a perfect spot for poets, artists and writers, ‘village life half an hour from Piccadilly Circus’ as described by Sir Compton Mackenzie.  Two hundred years later, the Vale of Health has grown from those first few cottages but it still retains a village feel and provides the perfect setting for exploring the heath. Make a loop from the Vale through the heath and finish in Hampstead at our favourite cafe Ginger & White for a coffee and cake.

One of London’s largest parks, covering over 350 acres, Hyde Park is an oasis in the centre of the capital.

Hyde Park (1)

Originally a hunting ground for royalty in the 1500s, the park is now popular with everyone, from Sunday rollerbladers to running events, recreational activities, big summer concerts and mass demonstrations. In the colder months there is Winter Wonderland with its Christmas markets and fairground rides to brighten a grey day.

Although it’s a busy and popular park, it isn’t difficult to find a quiet place of your own. And with autumn upon us, who doesn’t love wrapping up for a cozy walk through the park with a hot chocolate?

We love slipping into our Cocorose fold up shoes for one of our favourite walks, which links the royal parks of Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, Green Park and St James Park together. It’s a lovely way to spend a few hours marvelling at royal households and palaces, famous monuments, statues and fountains. And all without needing to take too many steps outside of parkland and gardens. An oasis indeed.

With Halloween around the corner, we head to Highgate in North London to explore its famous Grade 1 listed cemetery and nature reserve. Perched on a hill overlooking London, Highgate Cemetery was opened in 1839 and soon it became the fashionable place to be buried. Writers, scientists, painters, inventors, philosophers and a host of other illustrious people, both historic and of our times, are buried here amongst the labyrinth of ornate Victorian vaults and mausoleums, Gothic tombs and buildings and modern minimalist gravestones.

The cemetery is made up of two parts straddling Swain’s Lane. The western part can only be explored via tour group and contains the Egyptian Avenue, Circle of Lebanon, Terrace Catacombs, the Chapel and the Mausoleum of Julius Beer, all fabulous sights. The eastern part is home to the cemetery’s most famous resident, Karl Marx, and visitors are free to wander the winding paths amongst angel statutory and historic and modern gravestones. Both parts require an admission fee which goes towards upkeep of the cemetery.

Stratford

High tea may not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of Stratford in London’s east end. But since the major overhaul of this postcode, courtesy of the 2012 summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, high tea is exactly what you can have here.

Three years on from the highly successful Games, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park remains hugely popular, with Londoners, tourists and athletes enjoying the stadiums, meadows, walkways and wetlands. The park boasts a number of iconic venues such as the Olympic Stadium and Aquatic Centre built to host the games but none are quite as easily recognisable as the ArcelorMittal Orbit.

This red, looping steel structure, created by Sir Anish Kapoor and designed by Cecil Balmond, is the tallest sculpture in Britain, stretching to 114.5m. The views from its observation deck reach 20 miles beyond the Olympic Park; a perfect place to see the park and many of London’s iconic buildings.

This autumn and for a limited time only, high tea is being served at the Orbit, 80m above London’s skyline. What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Just don’t forget your Cocoroses for a post-tea walk around the park.

Bayswater Wikimedia

Bayswater sits in an enviable position in Central London, an arm’s length from many of the capital’s best known attractions including Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, Marble Arch and Whiteleys shopping mall. But everybody knows these landmarks, and everybody loves something that little bit different, so here we take a look at three alternative, lesser known sights the area has to offer.

10653308004_5c38613d39_b

Walk down Leinster Gardens, a residential road of white stucco terraces typical of the area, and stop at numbers 23 and 24. Look closely and you might notice that these two houses aren’t what they seem. Behind the front doors and windows painted onto the facade lies a five foot thick wall and behind that, some old vents. An underground line runs under these buildings and at the time (1860s), the original trains were steam-powered. The open air vents were built to stop the tunnels from being filled with smoke and the vents were hidden behind numbers 23 and 24 so that the row of beautiful terraces remained unbroken.

4761989992_33642ff359_b

Rather more gruesome is Tyburn Gallows, close to Marble Arch. For six centuries, until 1783, this was where public executions were held and each execution attracted huge paying crowds. As the roads around Oxford Street became more fashionable, the public hangings were moved away from the area. The Tyburn Tree, from which prisoners were hung, is commemorated by a simple stone plaque on the ground on a traffic island at the junction of Edgeware Road with Marble Arch.

Perhaps best known nowadays as the home of the BBC buildings, Queens Park Rangers Football Stadium and Westfield London, White City in the northern part of Shepherds Bush was covered by arable fields until 1908, when the summer Olympics came to the capital. In true London style, these Games played a defining role on the world stage. With the starting line at Windsor Castle and the finishing line in front of the royal box in the stadium (where the BBC buildings currently stand), this became the official distance that athletes now run in the modern marathon.

White City has reinvented itself since the Games, with the BBC buildings, Queens Park Rangers Football Stadium and of course, Westfield London who plays host to numerous fashion brands.

Our White City lifestyle trainers have been inspired by the area, celebrating the link between sports and fashion.

Promo Banner 41 - White City

Although the Great Stadium was demolished in 1985, the finishing line for the 1908 Olympic marathon can still be seen today, marked by a commemorative marker on the pavement outside of the BBC buildings. Next time you’re Cocorosing it around White City, why not have a look at the old finishing line and the medal table, listed on the wall nearby.

Shoreditch and its surrounding areas is a haven for entrepreneurs, and this is where it all started for Cocorose London….

shoreditch-450x415

This historical east London district lies just a stone’s throw north of The City. From England’s first theatre built in 1576 to a thriving furniture industry, a textile industry centred around Spitalfields, and theatres and music halls, this area has long been London’s spiritual home of creative industry and the arts. Although the theatres and music halls are long gone, the textile industry’s legacy lives on in Old Spitalfields Market and the nearby Brick Lane and Truman Brewery Markets, where you can find contemporary and vintage fashion and jewellery, arts and crafts and much more, most of which are designed and made by the market traders themselves.

Much may have changed over the centuries, with the area’s fortunes rising, falling and rising again, but its entrepreneurial spirit has survived through the ages and today’s fortunes are centred on tech start ups, speciality coffee roasters, gourmet street food, art galleries and independent designers. A fitting place then, for Cocorose London’s debut way back in 2008!

Elegant and understated, our ‘Pimlico‘ shoes reflect the neighbourhood from which they take their name…

Walk south from the hub bub of Victoria train station and you will find yourself in the small, quiet district of Pimlico. This unassuming, elegant and mainly residential area of Central London sits on the north bank of the Thames and is easy to miss amidst its better known Westminster, Chelsea and Belgravia neighbours.

But not many neighbourhoods can count the Tate Britain, showcasing historical and contemporary British art as their local museum. And few can boast over 350 Grade II listed buildings and churches in such a small area.

Many a famous person, from Winston Churchill to writer Joseph Conrad, actor Laurence Olivier and designer Laura Ashley has called this enclave of private gardens and Regency architecture home and there are blue plaques on many of the white stucco terraces that line its streets.

On Saturdays (9am-1pm), the Pimlico Road Farmer’s Market at Orange Square (not far from Sloane Square) offers a perfect chance to CocoroseIt whilst you browse and sample the delights the stands have to offer.

Our ‘Islington’ lifesyle loafers are proving a hit with our Cocorosers and for this post, we spent a day exploring the district that inspired this style…

Fancy spending a day indulging in a bit of shopping followed by lunch, more shopping, coffee and rounded off with an evening at the theatre? If that sounds like your idea of the perfect day, then hip Islington is the place for you. Located in N1, this district north of the Thames is a treasure trove of independent boutiques, cafes, restaurants, bars and theatres centred around Upper Street.

Early birds can start the day at The Breakfast Club, tucked away in the cobbled streets of Camden Passage. But be warned, this tiny place is so popular you may need to queue (we’d therefore suggest Cocorosing It for this!). If you can’t make it for breakfast though, there’s always the brunch, lunch or dinner menus to whet your appetite.

451_camden-passage-large

After breakfast you can easily fill the morning exploring Camden Passage which is bursting with independent shops and market stalls selling modern and vintage clothing and jewellery, antiques, collectables and Japanese art.

For lunch, Islington institution Ottolenghi’s on Upper Street is unmissable. Specialising in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food, the counters are overflowing with colourful, mouthwatering and wholesome dishes artfully arranged and begging to be sampled.

This photo of Ottolenghi - Islington is courtesy of TripAdvisor

Walk off your feast with more shopping on Upper Street or head to Islington Green for some R&R from the hustle and bustle of Upper Street. This is also home to the Everyman Cinema Screen on the Green.

If you have young kids, a trip to Freightliners City Farm on Sheringham Road may be an unexpected surprise. This little gem of a farm has a wide variety of animals, a very popular farm shop stocking fruit, veg and honey (all produced on the farm) and a cafe.

When your energy levels start to flag mid afternoon, head to The Coffeeworks Project or Kipferl for artisan coffees and scrumptious sweet treats.

almeida-theatre

And for the evening? Catch a stage production at one of the many theatres Islington has to offer – from the larger, well known venues of Sadlers Wells and the Almeida Theatre to smaller venues such as the Little Angel Theatre, the Old Red Lion and Hen and Chickens Theatre. From dance to puppet shows to comedy, you’re spoiled for choice.

End your day in N1 with post-theatre drinks or dinner. 69 Colebrook Row is renowned for its cocktails. For dinner, Islington boasts cuisine from across the globe – Almeida (French), Rodizio Rico (Brazilian), Vintage Salt (posh fish and chips), Vivo (Italian) and Wahaca (Mexican) to name a few.

However you choose to spend your day in Islington,

Kicking off with one of our best-selling styles, our Clapham loafers, we embark on our journey to Clapham, situated just south of the river Thames.

Claphams

Cocorose London’s range of Clapham loafers, beautifully hand-made using hand-woven, contrasting leathers

Clapham has recently become synonymous with a hip and urban scene, home to young professionals and families alike.

clapham

With a vibrant bar and restaurant scene, there’s an array of choice to whet your appetites, whether it be an intimate dinner for two at four o nine or a hip and happening evening with the girls at WC – Wine and Charcuterie. Speaking of the latter, WC is home to one of Clapham’s trendiest kicks, located in a 100 year old listed former water closet. How very British indeed and perhaps not something to think about when your Black Pudding Scotch Egg and glass of wine is served.

For a more casual approach to the liquid diet (with premium craft beers, mind), Windmill on the Common claims to have London’s biggest beer garden (it is situated in Clapham Common, afterall) and whilst we’re in the habit of treating ourselves, it’s well worth a trip to Madeleine, for some French inspired fruit tarts and ice cream.

Madeleine Clapham. Timeout

Madeleine Clapham. Image from Timeout.com

Clapham may however, be best known for Clapham Common, an oasis of calm and greenery amidst the busy traffic of south west London. It’s a huge space, and houses a range of sporting facilities including a running track, cricket and football pitches and a skateboard venue. If you’re not in a sporty mood, that’s perfectly fine too. Why not take a stroll over to the Holy Trinity Clapham, an 18th century Georgian church overlooking the park, or visit the bandstand, a Grade II listed building, right in the centre of Clapham Common?

Did you know that Clapham Common is also home to three ponds and it even hosts its own summer music festival? If you’re just after a lazy Sunday, there will no doubt be a space of green with your name on it, for a picnic or lie down in the sun. Just take your Claphams with you and #CocoroseIt in Clapham Common.

In our latest photo shoot with The Royal Ballet, we were inspired by our very own philosophy of ‘Modern Luxury’. As the world continues to move at an increasingly rapid pace, we require smart fashion that moves seamlessly with our multi-tasking, modern lifestyles.

Dancers of The Royal Ballet are all too familiar with managing busy schedules and leading successful, on-the-go lifestyles. We wanted to capture what we have termed ‘Modern Luxury’ in our photo shoot, modelled by dancers Hannah Grennell from England, Isabella Gasparini from Brazil and Mariko Sasaki from Japan. By drawing on design, comfort and function, Cocorose London’s shoes are considerately designed for smart, on-the-go lifestyles… for women all around the world.

We asked the lovely Vanda to answer a few questions about Gina Ricci…

Untitled

When did you open Gina Ricci and why?
I took over Gina Ricci 11 years ago – it has always been a shoe shop for over 85 years and since a young age I have always had a passion for shoes, being a size 42 resulted in many struggles to find any sort of shoes that were comfortable. We always stock up to a size 8/42 and can therefore empathise with ladies who struggle to find good fitting shoes in the correct size.

Is there a particular look that you wanted to achieve in your store?
We don’t have a particular look in our store, we feel for our customer clientele a more laid back casual atmosphere is better. However we are looking into a store re fit in the next 12 months, this will bring the shop completely up to date.

ginariccishopfrontresize

What are your current favourite brands from your store?

We love Cocorose because of the quality, comfort and practicality. We love the idea of taking your flats with you where ever you go because nothing is worse than sore feet! We also love Gabor because of the comfort factor, and love HB because of their uniqueness to styling.

What are your favourite Cocorose London lifestyle shoes?

I love the Hoxton pump because you can wear it with anything and it would fit so neatly in anyone’s handbag. The girls love the Stratford and the Shoreditch.

What do you feel makes Gina Ricci special?
Gina Ricci is special due to the vast range of good quality and classic styling we base all our products on. Another contributing factor is the massive size range we offer to all our customers, we attract a niche market of people who have small sized (or large) feet. We offer sizes 33 (UK1) right through to a 42 (UK8), with most size runs including half sizes too. plus our dedication to customer service. We pride ourselves on making every customer experience at Gina Ricci is a positive and worthwhile one. Every customer gets treat the same, whether they spend £1.99 or £299 – our motto is if you have the time to shop then we have the time to provide you with a wide choice. We go up and beyond any one else when it comes to customer service, once one of the girls drove through to the next village to deliver a pair of shoes our customer needed before the weekend and couldn’t get to us before then.

What are the essentials every woman needs in their wardrobe this season?
I would say a pair of skinny jeans (white, denim) and a scallop hemmed top, teamed with the Shoreditch Cocorose pump for a cool chic take on daytime dressing.

2) Top of the Rock. Go all the way to the top of the Rockefeller Center and stand out on their observation deck for the best view of the city which includes the Empire State Building!

3) Central Park, beautiful in all seasons. Ice skate in the winter, row a boat in the summer or take long walks in the Autumn.

4) Brunch in Brooklyn. Visit Five Leaves for the best brunch around, you may have to queue but it’s definitely worth it. Order the pancakes.

5) Last but not least, Sephora. This beauty heaven has the largest and most diverse selection of beauty products you can find in one place, including loads of brands that aren’t available in the UK. Come here to stock up on your international favourites!

Spotlight On… Hobbs Woman

On March 14, 2014, in Spotlight On..., by cocorose
0

This time, the spotlight is on Hobbs Woman, a gorgeous boutique in Somerset. We spoke to the lovely Rachael, who took some time out of her busy day, to tell us what Hobbs Woman is all about…

Hobbs

When did you open Hobbs Woman and why?

Hobbs Woman opened its doors three years ago & has just celebrated its anniversary. The reason I opened Hobbs Woman was simple – I approached my fortieth birthday & felt “lost” as to what to wear & where to find it.

I realised there was a gap on the high street for women who wanted to feel on trend but not a fashion victim. We are a small team & my assistant Linda has been with me from day one & has shared my vision for Hobbs Woman.

Is there a particular look that you wanted to achieve in your store?

The colour scheme in-store changes seasonally to reflect the colours of the garments arriving.  I wanted the look to be stylish yet relaxed and most importantly individual. I think Hobbs Woman has now become a place where women come to feel inspired by fashion and feel that looking current & feeling good can be achieved, easily.

What are your current favourite brands from your store?

All of the brands we stock are very carefully chosen & edited so I can honestly say, I love them all. We currently stock Seasalt, Joules, Part Two, Oui, Gardeur & NYDJ. Our clothing style is beautiful, wearable pieces for everyday life.

What are your favourite Cocorose London ballerinas?

My personal favourite is the Bayswater Grey with fish leather detailing– I think they are a great colour to see you through most of the year plus I am a big fan of greys. I have just seen the new collection for SS14 & think it is the most gorgeous range yet.

Hobbs 2

What do you feel makes Hobbs Woman special?

The small detail. We have established great rapport & are on first name terms with many of our customers who have been tremendously loyal & supportive.  In turn I have a lot of them in mind when I look for new pieces. We also go to great lengths to make Hobbs Woman a relaxing, fun environment with quirky window displays, birthday lists, bespoke bags for their purchases & unusual products and in-store layout to make the whole experience reflect Hobbs Woman’s independence.

What are the essentials every woman needs in their wardrobe this season?

A lovely bright (weatherproof) jacket – its needs to be functional with our ever changing weather but look stylish!  A pair of stretch skinny jeans are a great investment plus some lightweight knitwear is a good buy. I particularly love this season’s knitwear with contrast sleeves & backs.

So what are you waiting for? Pay Hobbs Woman a visit to feel inspired by their classic fashion pieces. You’ll leave feeling great!

Spotlight On…ESPADA

On February 24, 2014, in Spotlight On..., by cocorose
0

ESPADA is a beautiful Women’s Boutique in Boroughbridge. We had a quick chat about the lovely store and this season’s must-have pieces.

Espada1

The gorgeous boutique!

When did you open ESPADA and why?
ESPADA was opened in September 2013, I wanted somewhere ladies could come and feel special. There isn’t anything like ESPADA in the area!
Is there a particular look you wanted to achieve in the store?
ESPADA has a no fuss feel, I wanted the clothes and shoes to be the main focus, it’s a very clean fresh look. Nothing takes the focus away from the fantastic products.
What kind of things can I find in ESPADA?
The brands that I do range from classic pieces, to everyday comfort. I love versatility, most of my pieces you can wear during the day with a pair of Cocorose London flats and also can be dressed up for the evening by adding a pair of heels.
Which Cocorose London ballerinas are your favourite?
My favourite Cocorose ballerinas this season are the Canonbury in Dalmatian. They’re fun and brighten up any outfit!
Espada2
What makes ESPADA special?
The thing that I think makes ESPADA special is the personalised customer service, I spend as much time with my customers as they need, and we can put together a whole outfit from bag and accessories, right down to the shoes.
What essentials does every woman need in her wardrobe this season?
This season a crisp white shirt, a pair of skinny jeans and, of course, a pair of Cocorose London ballerinas are  wardrobe essentials.
Espada3
Cocorose London would like to say a special thank you to Wendy from ESPADA for taking the time to answer our questions. Make sure you pay her a visit at -

London Unfolded!

On January 14, 2014, in Cocorose London, by cocorose
0

This year marks the fifth year that Cocorose London are Official Gift Partners to the EE British Academy Film Awards! And to celebrate, we’ve created London Unfolded, a collection of four short films that take a behind the scenes look into the lives of seven very interesting (and busy!) Cocorosers.

Take a look at them here -

London Unfolded is a stylish and creative collection of four short films that discover the lives of seven ‘Cocorosers’. The films explore the busy and non-stop nature of modern day life, and the way in which Cocorose London shoes seamlessly fit into their everyday lifestyles in an original and relevant way.

The use of film as a medium coupled with the subjects of the films makes for an interesting and significant opportunity to promote the upcoming BAFTA Awards and the special relationship that exists between BAFTA and Cocorose London.

Cocorose London travelled to four iconic London locations; Carnaby Street, Denmark Street, Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden, to follow and film each ‘Cocoroser’ in and around their everyday environments.

Our films unfold the ways in which these areas of London play different parts in each of the films, from the fashion forward Oxford Street to the Musician’s paradise that is Denmark Street. They took three months in total to complete and a lot of hard work! So we hope that you love them as much as we do.

We’ve got an amazing London Unfolded competition coming up and can’t wait to tell you about the prize, in order to enter we’re going to ask you to vote for your favourite film so get watching and get winning!

Spotlight On…Luxe Shoes

This month the Spotlight is on Luxe Shoes – a gorgeous and luxurious shoe store in Loughborough. We asked the lovely Amanda to answer a few questions about Luxe Shoes…

luxe4

luxe3

When did you open Luxe Ladies Shoes and why did you open it?

Luxe opened in August 2013. I can still remember that feeling of excitement as a little girl being taken shopping for new shoes, whether it be school shoes or best shoes! That feeling has never left me & I still love “NEW SHOES”. There are very few independents in the Midlands, I felt there was a gap in the market for something different, and Loughborough because there are some fabulous ladies boutiques and no shoe shops!

Is there a particular look that you wanted to achieve in your store?

I wanted to create a simple, stylish, welcoming shopping environment. I wanted the shoes to breathe & be the centre of attention.

What are your current favourite fashion items from your store?

Now where do I start……I love the Cocorose collection & have several pairs, I love the Geox studded biker boots & the Lucy Choi London gold sparkly court shoes!

What are your favourite Cocorose London ballet pumps?

luxe1

My current favourites are Pimlico Black Pony Hair & the Leopard Hoxton, but this does change when I get a new pair!

What do you feel makes Luxe Ladies Shoes special?

Luxe offer ladies the opportunity to browse collection not available in the neighbouring cities of Nottingham & Leicester. Luxe offers customers a relaxed, friendly experience whether just browsing or looking for that perfect shoe!

What are the essentials every woman needs in their wardrobe this season?

For autumn / winter the must have essential pieces are a great coat, fabulous pair of boots, beautiful ballet pumps, a statement handbag & a beautiful piece of cashmere.

Cocorose London would like to say a special Thank You to Amanda to taking the time to talk with us!

Spotlight On…Proudlock & Harry

On October 10, 2013, in Spotlight On..., by cocorose
0

P&H1

This month the spotlight is on Proudlock & Harry – an original and innovative store in Norwich. We asked the team a few questions about their store and here’s what they had to say…

When did you open Proudlock and Harry and why?

Proudlock and Harry opened in September 2013. The store is the concept of Clare Louise Angel, based on her experience of the retail sector in locations as diverse as Norwich, Dublin and The Caymen Islands. The store is the culmination of Clare’s ambition to own her own retail outlet.

Is there a particular look that you wanted to achieve in your store?

Yes! The boutique is a response to the often uniform look on our town and cities high streets today. It is opulent in its appearance and stands out for the beautiful products it offers to its customers. The store is designed to look very feminine and is based on a Boudoir theme, epitomised by the Chandelier that once graced a chateaux in the south of France.

What do you feel makes Proudlock and Harry special?

We are very proud when customers tell us how beautiful the boutique and its products are and that there is nothing else in Norwich like Proudlock and Harry. What makes the store special is the quality and the style of the products we sell and the customer service that shoppers can expect to receive from us. That and the fitting room which is designed to give the look and feel of a real boudoir and means the shopper has the whole first floor to themselves when trying on outfits or accessories.

What are your current favourite fashion items from your store?

Cocorose London of course! We fell in love with the brand when we first saw them at the Pulse exhibition and knew they would be incredibly popular and that’s been proven to be just the case. One of our other favourite pieces is definitely the Milla bra from Lacivious, worn by fashion icons such as Rhianna and can be worn as traditional lingerie or as outerwear.

P&H2

What are your favourite Cocorose London ballet pumps?

The ‘Alice’ pumps are just beautiful and always grab the attention of customers.

What are the essentials every woman needs in their wardrobe this season?

With winter fast approaching a must have for a cosy night in is a pair of knitted booties from Samantha Holmes and nothing beats watching X factor in an Ayten Gasson baby doll, knickers and bed jacket with a glass of wine. The must have pair of Cocorose London is Pimlico Black!

Cocorose London would like to say a special thank you to Gary at Proudlock and Harry for taking the time to answer these questions.

The Spotlight is on OKeefe, a gorgeous and stylish boutique owned by Janine OKeefe. Janine was kind enough to answer some of our questions about her store, and here they are…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When did you open Okeefe boutique and why did you open it?

I opened OKeefe in 2005 in the leafy village of Claygate and moved to our current location in Esher High Street in 2010.  I felt there was a real gap in the market for stylish, original and affordable fashion available for the forever forty year olds,  something different from the High Street.  I still have many of my original customer’s from those early days.

Is there a particular look that you wanted to achieve in your store?

When we moved to Esher we had a much larger unit and loved doing the shopfit creating an urban and edgy interior with exposed brick walls, scaffolding for rails and sourced some lovely vintage furniture in the mix.   The store is much admired and very different from most Surrey independents.

Okeefe5

What are your current favourite fashion items from your store?

The Fab suede jackets – a perfect  transactional piece  as one season leads to another .  I also love the Ash Jalouse ankle boots , perfect now with summer dresses and later with skinny jeans.

What are your favourite Cocorose London ballet pumps?

The Sandringham grey snakeskin are amazing…

Okeefe3

What do you feel makes Okeefe special?

Genuine Customer Service alongside some unique and exclusive collections.

What are the essentials every woman needs in their wardrobe this season?

A couple of pairs of great jeans , a biker jacket,  a pea coat, some cashmere jumpers , a crisp white shirt,  a large cross body satchel bag , a great pair of  ballet pumps (Cocorose naturally) , several pairs of boots –short, flat and knee length and a few day to evening dresses  (not black) – Okeefe have it all -  Sorted !

Spotlight On…Adornments

On August 22, 2013, in Cocorose London, Spotlight On..., by cocorose
0

This time the spotlight is on Adornments! We took some time out to talk with Ayla about her boutique and here’s what she said…

  SPOTayla3

When did you open Adornments boutique and why did you open it?

Adornments opened for business in November 2007, which I think was about the same time as Cocorose, so we started our journey together.  Prior to this I used to find it difficult locally to find unusual items for my own wardrobe and I realised that there were many women like myself who wanted something different from the mass-produced items in the high street stores. As a result Adornments was born.

Is there a particular look that you wanted to achieve in your store?

My customers tend to favour smart, casual clothing including items that function as daywear but can work with the right accessories for evenings and special occasions. Practicality is also a key feature of most of my stock. Therefore I have always been careful to consider the accessories I carry, ranging from handbags and scarves to jewellery and footwear. In this respect I was delighted to discover Cocorose which complements my clothing range beautifully and is admirably practical.

What are your current favourite fashion items from your store?

The daytime to evening dimension comes into play here too among which I would mention Masai clothing for its distinctiveness, its fabrics, and its practicality. Alongside this, NYDJ are my favourite trousers for their very flattering look and extremely comfortable fit for any shape and size. I favour classic handbags with a twist of some sort that makes them distinctive yet practical and I carry only footwear that is both stylish and comfortable, so clearly Cocorose features strongly here.

What are your favourite Cocorose London ballet pumps?

Janan of Cocorose London creates so many beautiful designs that it is difficult to name a favourite but, if pushed, I suppose that my own personal favourite would be the Buckingham style from the fold-up Classic Elegance range, also, particularly anything in nude as it goes with everything. However there are always designs and amazing colours to choose from that fit with most of the collections I have in the boutique.

SPOTayla

What do you feel makes Adornments special?

Adornments has a unique understanding for its customers’ needs, and treats every individual customer as special. It provides this personal service for everyone who comes through its doors, whether the customer is a regular or a first time visitor. Personal recommendation is our best, indeed almost our only, form of advertising.

What are the essentials every woman needs in their wardrobe this season?

I would say they should have well-fitted trousers that would take them from day to evening and smart casual tops to interchange as the fashion experts recommend: for every good trouser there should be a variety of tops. I also firmly believe that layering is very important as it can be used to create different looks; for example a basic top dressed with a blouse or a tunic and finished with a cardigan, a jacket or just a wrap or poncho, depending on the occasion. For any ensemble Cocorose shoes are ideal not only because of the styles and colours available but also because of their comfort and practicality.

A special Thank You to Ayla for taking the time to answer our questions, we love Adornments and think you will too! Details below.

Keep in Chic in Camo!

On August 14, 2013, in Cocorose London, Trend Spotting, by cocorose

TREND ALERT: CAMOUFLAGE!

We absolutely love the camouflage we’re seeing all over the catwalks and in the glossy magazines but sometimes it can be hard to incorporate into our everyday outfits. But never fear, Cocorose London is here. This week we’ve released our firm favourite Farringdon style in two brand new colours; Camouflage Green and Camouflage Brown, both on printed pony hair. So chic!

The soft and foldable leather loafers have double cushioned insoles and a non-slip outer sole which ensure the utmost comfort! Pair with skinny jeans or a floaty dress and look like you’ve just stepped off of the catwalk. Easy.
